The perfect companion to lavender is white sage, a highly respected and beautiful pale green plant with an earthy and herbaceous aroma. The Latin word for sage is salvia which means ‘to heal.’ With its natural antimicrobial properties, it’s no wonder white sage is perfectly suited to clear negative energy from space and objects. Burning white sage promotes healing, wisdom, and spiritual clarity. This fragrance honors the sacred practice of using herbs to cleanse body and space through fire and smoke.

The purification of sacred space in preparation for meditation or ceremony can be just as important as the ritual itself. The practice of blessing space, also called cleansing or clearing, is found throughout every culture and faith tradition and comes in many forms; all with the goal of removing any lingering negativity, inviting positive energy, as well as encouraging a mindset shift for openness to spiritual transformation.

Smoke cleansing, commonly called smudging in reference to Native American ceremonial blessings, is one way to purify sacred space. Smudge sticks can contain many variations of herbs and flowers chosen for their healing properties which transform the space when burned. The ascending smoke from the burning bundles brings our wishes and intentions into the universe. This mingling of earth and humanity with heaven is a most beautiful sentiment.
