The Legend of Sleepy Hollow is a classic American gothic horror story. It takes place in the 1790 Dutch settlement of Sleepy Hollow, New York from the perspective of the newly arrived schoolmaster Ichabod Crane. Ghost stories were abundant in the region and a particularly favorite ghostly character was the Headless Horseman, a Hessian soldier who lost his head from a cannon ball during the Revolutionary War. The apparition roams the hills at night searching for his missing head. One autumn night after leaving a party, Ichabod has an ill-fated encounter with the Headless Horseman in which he is chased, attacked, and never heard from again. The investigation into his disappearance turned up Ichabod’s saddle-less horse and near a deep brook his hat beside a shattered pumpkin. The tale has inspired countless artistic interpretations featuring the iconic Headless Horseman and pumpkin.
